Building legacy: Clark Ivory follows dad's footsteps, named Salt Lake Chamber's Giant in our City

house of ivory

Our home is all about the views that are captured throughout with the house needing to pay homage to its setting. Having a few builds and renovationsunder our belt and both being time poor, we recognised we needed help to deliver on the potential of the house. Bringing refinement to timeless design, House of Ivory spaces have a considered classic-meets-contemporary aesthetic and immersive liveability. Each collaborative journey combines our vision and your needs to craft your dream space. Instrumental in moving the village forward with projects like the building of Westwood Town Hall, his accomplishments as a community leader parallel his success as an inventor and businessman. The bigger problem, however, is the fact that this structure was not even built by King Ahab.

Meet Georgia.

The goal of Ancient Origins is to highlight recent archaeological discoveries, peer-reviewed academic research and evidence, as well as offering alternative viewpoints and explanations of science, archaeology, mythology, religion and history around the globe. Our goal at EstateSales.org is to provide the industry with reference information that will educate new businesses, provide professional tips to existing ones and open the communication lines between the industry professionals. When in doubt or you have found yourself in a gray area, don’t sell the item. In this day and age when everyone is watching everyone, exercise caution by first doing your due diligence, then making an educated decision. Online platforms have additional policies one must abide by that go above and beyond federal, state, and local regulations.

Most recent Business stories

Certificates, dated photos, letters or documents proving that the item was lawfully imported prior to January 18, 1990 if it’s African Ivory, and July 1, 1975 for Asian Ivory. There are a few things you must do first to make sure you are protected and properly abiding by the law at the federal, state, and local levels. Personal possession is OK, because a family heirloom can pass down within the family. This also applies if you have a vintage musical instrument that has ivory pieces or components. “Ye that lie upon beds of ivory….”  The problem was not having and enjoying nice things.

Her dedication and knowledge of design details were impressive and she was also very conscious of budgets and her time - we found her to be very efficient and effective for the tasks at hand. Thanks to Georgia, our home has been transformed into a stunning space that we will enjoy for a lifetime. We are so grateful for her amazing work and couldn't be happier with the end result. Connect with other professionals on the biggest Facebook Group for estate sale companies. That gift or donation must be made clear and cannot be exchanged for a service or product in return, otherwise it will be considered trade and must abide by the federal, state, and local regulations.

For sake of information, DNA testing is possibly the best method to tell the difference between African and Asian ivory. But, by just looking at it, the African ivory doesn’t usually have the pinkish tint that’s found in Asian ivory. The grain marks in Asian ivory also have sharper peaks, and they zig-zag a bit more.

In addition to federal ivory laws, California passed its own law regarding ivory transactions in 1976 (California Penal Code section 653o), which makes it unlawful to import, possess with intent to sell, or sell any elephant part. However, uncodified language in the annotated portion of the code creates an exception for elephant parts imported prior to June 1, 1977, significantly weakening the law’s practical impact. It is often pointed out that the existence of such a structure has been confirmed by archaeological evidence. However, it will be shown that this is not as straightforward as it seems, and that the phrase “Ivory Palace of King Ahab” is a rather problematic one. In 1932, the Joint Expedition to Samaria, located in present-day West Bank, discovered a large quantity of ivory objects and decorations (a total of 250 fragments were recorded) near the northern area of Samaria’s summit. This has led people, including the archaeologists, to believe that they have found King Ahab’s Ivory Palace.

When we look elsewhere in Scripture, ivory usually appears in a positive light. In I Kings 10, which describes the abundant blessings God gave Solomon due to his wisdom, we are told Solomon had a great throne of ivory overlaid with gold. He had a fleet that came every three years bring riches, including ivory.

Welcome to Ivory House

Ahab had an “ivory house” — this could possibly mean a house actually made of ivory, but it is much more likely that it meant a palace which was full of ivory decorations. These items, in Room 57 of the British Museum, were found in Samaria, Ahab’s capital city, and date from around the time of Ahab. They, like the ivory items at Fort Shalmaneser, are Phoenician in style. House of Ivory is a multidisciplinary creative studio specialising in intuitive, feel-good design. Highly skilled in collaborative and considered curation, we create memorable concepts in residential interior design, shaping uniquely inviting spaces that are luxury you want to live in. Ivory owners are quite educated on the current laws relating to their collections, unfortunately many estate sale clients aren’t the actual collectors themselves but may be family members when you’re hired to host an estate sale.

A Utah native who grew up in Millcreek, Ivory runs point for Ivory Homes — the Beehive State's top homebuilder since 1998. The latest award joins a long list of accolades for Ivory, including being named ProBuilder's National Home Builder of the Year in 2021. SALT LAKE CITY — Ivory Homes CEO Clark Ivory on Thursday night was honored with the 45th annual Giant in our City award.

House of Ivory acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land we live and work on, the Bidjigal and Gadigal peoples. We pay respect to the Elders of the Eora Nation, past and present, and extend that respect to all other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today. Like all cut flowers, orchids naturally have a limited lifespan, but by following a few care tips, you can maximise their longevity. Trim their stems on an angle before placing them into a vase filled with clean, room-temperature water. Treat them gently and avoid direct sunlight, drafts and heat, and they’ll stay pretty longer.

As an esteemed interior designer, she sought to express her artistic vision on her terms. What began as weekly flower installations in a single home and restaurant soon metamorphosed into an enterprise. If you’ve never come across an estate sale that had ivory, you’re in luck, but you may sooner or later. If you’ve come across an ivory collector’s estate, we’d love to hear from you and find out how you handled the situation. Thousands of members discuss, ask, and answer questions relating to this topic and many other topics that will help you grow your estate sale business and avoid situations that others may have experienced. There are a few exceptions, including transfers to legal heirs, musical instruments comprised of less than 20 percent of ivory or rhino horn, and bona fide antiques comprised of less than 5% of ivory or rhino horn. The bill also increases penalties for those trafficking in ivory and rhino horn to up to $50,000 or an amount equal to two times the value of the wildlife involved in the violation, whichever is greater, and/or one year in prison. More than 100,000 elephants were killed by poachers between 2010 and 2012, leading some scientists to predict that African forest elephants could be extinct within the decade.

The first problem involves the question of what is meant by an ‘ivory palace’. One may envision an ivory palace to be a building somehow constructed literally from ivory (that’s what I’d imagine anyway). After all, if King Ahab were to be depicted as a really wealthy king, this would be a pretty good way to do so.

The Ivory Palace of King Ahab

As of Jan. 1, 2024, Ivory had 1,917 homes under construction — 667 traditional Ivory homes and 1,250 apartment homes, student housing or affordable town houses for its nonprofit arm, Ivory Innovations. From our first engagement we connected with Georgia’s calm and engaged style, she was able to quickly reflect our needs and desires in her recommendations. We initially only had her for a part of the scope, however recognised that her skills would deliver us a much better outcome if carried through the entire project. Thus 18 months later, a full design commissioned and delivered, we now enjoy the luxe comfort that we desired. By good fortune we were introduced to Georgia -recognising our desire for a clean and luxury aesthetic for our new home near Berry.

The federal wildlife laws and regulations DO NOT prohibit donating or gifting an ivory item. If you are allowed to sell ivory in your state, or meet the exemption requirements for interstate sales, you do not need a permit from the U.S. If your state does allow the sale of ivory, you must now make sure you abide by the federal law and be ready to produce documents required to justify the sale within your state if asked. If you think the score board is ‘Archaeology – 1, Bible – 0’, it isn’t quite as simple. Reliance on the Bible for the interpretation of archaeological evidence is very much like the reliance of any textual evidence. Although historical archaeology is said to be the “handmaiden to history”, it isn’t quite so.

Ahab and Jezebel

The Kurkh Stela (also in Room 6 at the Museum) records more of Shalmaneser’s exploits, including his victory at the Battle of Qarqar, the largest known battle up to that time in history. The monument lists the combatants — and one of the countries defeated by Shalmaneser was the Northern Kingdom of Israel, led by Ahab. Servicing the Eastern suburbs of Sydney, the Southern Highlands and surrounds, our offerings also extend to an Australia-wide flower delivery service, focusing on exquisite orchids, a selection of one-of-a-kind homewares and Tony Assness candles. SAN FRANCISCO (January 7, 2015) – Every 15 minutes, an African elephant is killed for its tusks. And some of that ivory ends up right here on store shelves in California. Dedicating this entrepreneurial endeavor to her young daughter Ivy, the salon’s namesake, sets an important precedent for female empowerment & independence in the “House” & within the local community.

I had the pleasure of working with Georgia who oversaw both the fitout and soft furnishing of our head office and showroom. Georgia understood the functional needs of the business and married this with our design brief, delivering a classic but contemporary end result on time and on budget. Thanks to Georgia, our small and narrow terrace came to life with a perfectly planned layout, a beautiful colour palette and well-chosen furniture and styling. We are thrilled with the final result and couldn't have achieved it without her meticulous attention to detail and patience. Georgia's talent, maturity and passion for design were evident in every decision she made. She understood our brief perfectly and always ordered samples to ensure they were the best fit for our home before making any decision - her efforts were always above and beyond.

Under California law, it’s illegal to import, possess with intent to sell, or sell any elephant part. But a loophole allows the purchase and sale of ivory imported prior to 1977. So many items are advertised as antiques or crafted to look older so they’ll appear legal under California law.

Sign up for House of Ivory news, exclusive offers, and (of course) our signature orchids. Georgia was invaluable in sourcing and selecting all of the finishes for our new home, in addition to furnishing the house in a way that perfectly complemented the architecture- in the most sophisticated way! We were so grateful for her expertise, industry contacts and guidance throughout the entire process.

Mitchell, the Samaria find included winged sphinxes — like the one from Fort Shalmaneser pictured above. What they do show us is that the smaller cache found in Samaria was representative (in its idolatrous elements) of Phoenician ivory carvings — the kind of ivories a Phoenician princess like Jezebel would use to decorate a palace. Specialists in residential interior and floral design, House of Ivory is a multi-skilled creative studio with a nous for executing timeless design and considered, liveable spaces.

If you think archaeology’s here to support the textual evidence (of which history relies on), you’d better think again. I suppose, at the end of the day, one has to be critical of one’s sources, and not take the textual evidence at face value. Also, archaeologists ought to be careful with what they say, since there may be unforeseen repercussions, sometimes much worse than the misidentification of an ancient structure. Our blog for shoppers covers antiques, collectibles, vintage finds, and all things estate sales. One thing most experienced estate sale professionals understand is that a well-informed client will have a big impact on the final outcome and satisfaction of that client. Your best bet is to never include it in a sale, and ask the client to keep it.

We don’t know, but we know that the ivory carvings from Samaria and those in Assyria are both of Phoenician workmanship and that Ahab and one of his successors were defeated by and/or paid tribute to Shalmaneser. Shalmaneser III, the Assyrian king who built the palace now known as Fort Shalmaneser, isn’t even mentioned in the Bible. He has a little bit of relevance to this story because of two items we looked at previously, in Ancient Royal Propaganda. And I will smite the winter house with the summer house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end, saith the LORD. With more than a decade of experience in both interior and floral design, Georgia brings a distinctive perspective to both disciplines.

During the course of estate sales, there are many other items you’ll run into such as alcohol, firearms, safety regulation issues for car seats, cribs, etc… that you must also consider and educate yourself, and your staff about. The estate sale industry is not currently regulated by a governing body. However, veteran estate sale professionals understand the risks involved and tend to stay away from items prohibited for sale by federal, state, and/or local government. When the ban was first announced, it left antique dealers, and auction houses in a tough spot! Many of them do not have proof of age to meet the requirements, and certified dating tests are costly, making it virtually impossible to liquidate all the ivory items they had on their shelves. Almost all companies know there’s an ivory trade ban, yet a quick online search will lead to various ivory carvings listed for sale, this tends to cause a bit of confusion leaving many wondering whether to sell, destroy, or donate the ivory items they find.

She is also one of the few Black women who raised $2 million for her business. When asked why she chose to go all in on paint rather than wallpapers for her business, Gibbons shared that her goal was to create a business with a legacy that stretches beyond her. "The paint shopping experience is fundamentally broken and archaic. To me, that signaled a bigger opportunity." With features in TV and print, including HGTV, InStyle, Elle Decor, and more, Gibbons has built an impressive portfolio as a TV host.

Instead, opt for an off-white and bring in those darker shades with your bed linen, rugs, drapes and decor. Black walls are a great backdrop for color, making anything you put against it feel 100% more vibrant. So take a cue from this black and white bedroom and add a daring color like orange or yellow that's really going to stand out against the darkness – it needn't be in a large dose either, just a couple of throw pillows would do it. Navigating the design world—a predominantly white industry—comes with its own set of unique challenges when you’re a decorator of color. In addition to executing design projects with a commitment to excellence, securing meaningful opportunities for recognition is equally arduous.

Read on to learn more about some of the most inspiring black designers working today—and hear what they have to say about diversity in the design world. We tend to avoid black or dark colors in smaller bedrooms because it's design 101 that lighter colors make a small space feel bigger. And yes, while that's true darker colors can actually have a similar space enlarging effect. Opting for a black feature wall or even on all four walls can blur the edges of the room creating the allusion of more space. Both black and white schemes - as separate colors – lend themselves well to a minimalist scheme, that pared-back look needs less clutter and has a contemporary feel. It can work really well with black, but do remember, that unless you want to wake up in a dark room (which may be a tad depressing), it can be wise to add in a little contrast.

Keita Turner describes her personal style as "fashionably chic, enduringly classic," and after following her Instagram account, you'll see it's just that. You could carry on the bright accent into other parts of the room - a vase on your bedside, or a rug for example, it all depends on how much color you want to add. Mixing in another element to a predominantly black scheme can be a smart move. Metal touches add warmth visually and gives the space a modern feel in this instant. The carved wooden drawers of this bedside table create interest whilst still being all black, and makes it easy to accessorize with.

There's a drastic disparity in the industry, one that has nowhere to go but up. Organizations such as the Black Interior Designers Network are helping to elevate Black designers' work. However, the same systemic problems many people of color face daily are incredibly relevant. Both in the design industry and many other realms of life, I see decisions being made based on social bias, favoritism, and a laziness to explore things that are different. Likewise, in our industry, showrooms call on the same faces to represent them every season because those faces delivered last time.

We’re getting to an era of inclusion, of the black dollar, and black luxury. It’s not my job to steer people to you if you’re too lazy or don’t care enough to look. I don’t want to call out a particular publication, but one invited a few of us black designers out, and we went. Yes, we’re having this conversation and, yes, you want to be supportive. If you’re telling me that you don’t want my work, or it doesn’t fit your brand because it’s not good, then I’m fine with that.

It's a wonder that a multi-billion dollar industry still has a big issue with diversity. In this sector, Black designers make up only 1.5% of the interior design industry (via Zippia), but not for lack of trying. If you’re a fan of colorful, eclectic interiors, then allow me to introduce you to Tavia Forbes and Monet Masters, the women behind the Atlanta-based interior design firm Forbes + Masters.

Along with ATI, Tshiama is the co-founder and creative director for Clamp Agency, which focuses on developing e-commerce businesses, and has been featured in Forbes and Net-a-Porter. I felt like we black interior designers were a rarity in the industry when I first started. And that automatically made me [consider] other African American interior designers as my direct competition. So instead of celebrating how rare we are, using that as a resource, we find that we have to automatically compete with each other. The only black interior designer I remember seeing back then was Lou Switzer of the Switzer Group.

His work is often clean, collected, and never without a handy DIY trick. She opted out of attaining a full-time degree in favor of taking multiple courses at prestigious institutions like Parsons School of Design, Pratt, and the New York School of Interior Design. "The strategic, analytical, financial, and communication skills gained during those years have allowed me to differentiate myself in a crowded design field," McLeod told Net-a-Porter. "I always say my superpower is my balance between these skills and my creativity." With a primary focus on Clare, Nicole Gibbons pivoted to small business owner when she founded the company in 2020. It is a great shade for using as an accent if you are decorating with white or with light colors, especially in a kitchen, as it can help anchor and bring depth to the space. Black can be a dominating shade in interiors, so if you're thinking of decorating with black wall-to-wall, as well as over the ceiling, be sure to include elements that will break up the space and bring warmth. Before launching her design firm in 2018, she was the founder and creative director of DomiCile magazine, where she featured the handmade products from local small businesses in the D.C. Can Passengers Bring Cannabis on Cruise Ships? What to Know About Pot and Cruising

how to sneak weed on a cruise

Some may prohibit it altogether, while others may have designated areas where vaping is allowed. Before planning your trip, do your research and familiarize yourself with the policies of the cruise line you’ll be sailing with. However, if you find yourself on a cruise line with strict rules against vaping, we’re here to help you navigate the situation and enjoy your vaping experience without any unwanted attention.

Is Medical Marijuana Allowed on a Cruise?

It’s important to note that discretion should be a priority when selecting a vape device for a cruise. Choose a device that not only satisfies your personal vaping preferences but also helps you blend in seamlessly with the surroundings. Also, if passengers were freely permitted to vape in their staterooms, more people would likely be trying to vape prohibited substances. Cruise ships typically ban balcony smoking due to fire risk – a real concern for cruise lines. Because the policy is based on U.S. federal law, you won't find a cruise line based in America that has a different perspective, even when the company's ships sail in other countries.

Even if the cruise ship departs from a state where weed is legal, passengers cannot bring the drug on board the vessel. However, be aware that no method is foolproof, and it’s still essential to exercise caution and minimize any potential odors. Use a wet-ringed-out towel to block any gaps under the door so smoke can’t get through to the cabin. Even if your bag is manually checked, security staff are more focused on looking for weapons and alcohol. If they are gummies or mints, people mix them with well-known generic brands of the same type. Ideally, choose THC gummies or mints with no branding on them so they don’t stand out.

It’s important to weigh the pros and cons of each method carefully and choose one that aligns with your personal risk tolerance. Many places that are visited by cruise ships are relaxing restrictions on the drug. For example, it is legal in California, Washington, Alaska, New York, Massachusetts and other coastal states. Under the cruise contract you sign to board a ship, cruise lines have the right to search your room, throw you off the ship and turn you over to local authorities for any violations.
